Ushnishavijaya Dharani from Chimé Phagma Nyingtik

The Immaculate Jewel: A dharani consecration and offering liturgy of Ushnishavijaya

from “The Heart Essence of Deathless Arya Tara” (Chimé Phagma Nyingtik) arranged in a clear and convenient form”. (無垢摩尼 : 無死聖度母心要 ( 契美帕瑪寧替 ) 之支分 一見即明之佛頂尊勝佛母陀羅尼修法與供養儀軌)

Introduction

Ushinishavijaya is a manifestation of all the merit contained within the Buddha’s topknot, which is also represented as the wisdom of non-duality. The purpose of this dharani is said to be to help sentient beings in a troubled and tumultuous world. By means of this dharani, beings will obtain happiness and be free of suffering, increase in prosperity and longevity, remove karmic obstacles, eliminate disasters and calamities, remove enmity and hatred, fulfill all wishes, and quickly be led onto the path of the Buddhadharma1A longer list of the benefits and applications of this dharani includes:
• Destroy calamities and rescue those in difficulties;
• Eliminate offenses and create good deeds;
• Purify all karmic obstructions;
• Increase blessings and lengthen lifespan;
• Attain anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi;
• Relieve beings in the ghost realm;
• Benefit birds, animals and all crawling creatures;
• Increase wisdom;
• Revert the fixed karma;
• Eliminate various illness;
• Destroy hells;
• Ensure the safety of the households, and having children to inherit the family pride;
• Harmonise husbands and wives;
• Be able to reborn in Sukhavati or other pure lands;
• Heal sickness inflicted by pretas;
• Request for rain etc.
See: Ushishavijaya Dharani Sutra (Chinese: 佛頂尊勝陀羅尼經) in wikipedia.
. This dharani was the principal practice during the 10th Ushinishavijaya Drupchö2drupchö (Tibetan: སྒྲུབ་མཆོད་, Wylie: sgrub mchod) = an elaborate and intensive form of sadhana practice held over several days (usually three to eight days) – see drupchö. with 1000 Offerings led by Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche in Taipei, Taiwan from November 19-24, 2020.

Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche gave a teaching on the meaning of this dharani on November 19, 2020 during the 10th Ushinishavijaya Drupchö. He said:

This Ushnishavijaya Dharani is like a masterpiece. Every word was supposedly crafted as a masterpiece by billions of buddhas and bodhisattvas. It’s supposedly so great that even lord Mañjushri asked somebody to bring this dharani to him while he was in Mount Wutai in China. […]

Reading this dharani holds your mind together with the state of unborn, meaning shunyata. And while the method holds you to the state of shunyata, simultaneously you also emanate the omniscience, the all-knowing wisdom and unobstructed compassion at all times. […]

How I wish I had the skill of Mañjushri and the wit of Avalokiteshvara and the assertiveness of Vajrapani to explain this to you. Because this word [dharani] is so beautiful and so profound. I’m sure most of the time you [may] think “Oh, mantra is magical. Dharani is magical”. Yes, of course, that will do. If that’s what you’re satisfied with, why not? That will do. But here we are talking about incredible magic. It’s the magic of looking at something that is truth and at the same time hundreds of thousands of beings just see it as a lie. […] These seeming opposites coexisting together so harmoniously. This is the magic.

Wow, if you can really understand this. And not just understand, if you can tap into that wealth, you will be as unshakeable as Mount Meru. But at the same time, [you will be] as adaptable as the one blade of grass on the peak of a windy mountain.

[Note: Please see the teaching on “Dharani” given on November 19, 2020.]

The Ushnishavijaya Dharani below is in Sanskrit, based on the Ushinishavijaya Puja liturgy by Siddhartha’s Intent Taiwan, 2020 (中華民國悉達多本願佛學會 印製)3Note: the full Sanskrit with diacritics is included in Appendix 1 below. The Siddhartha’s Intent Taiwan website has two different versions of the dharani, one with Tibetan pronunciation of the Sanskrit and the second with a hybrid Sanskrit pronunciation and partial diacritics. Both are included in Appendix 2.. The complete liturgy is available from Siddhartha’s Intent Taiwan.

Appendix 3

An English translation of the Ushnishavijaya Dharani by the great Zen scholar D. T. Suzuki (from “The Manual of Zen Buddhism”, first published in 1934).

DHARANI OF THE VICTORIOUS BUDDHA-CROWN

Adoration to the Blessed One who is the most excellent one in the triple world!
Adoration to the Enlightened One, to the Blessed One!
Namely:
Om! Cleanse [us], cleanse [us]! O one who is always impartial! One who, being in possession of all-pervading, all-illuminating light, is pure in his self-nature, cleansed of the darkness of the five paths of existence!
Baptize us, O Sugata, with an immortal baptism which consists of the best words, of the great true phrases!
Remove disasters, remove disasters, O one who holds an eternal life!
Cleanse us, cleanse us, O one who is as pure as the sky!
O one who is as pure as the victorious Buddha-crown!
O one who is inflamed with a thousand rays of light!
O all the Tathagatas who look over [the entire world]!
O one who is perfect in the Six Paramitas!
O one who holds the great seal empowered with the spiritual power which emanates from the heart of every Tathagata!
O one whose body is as hard and pure as Vajra!
O one who is thoroughly pure, cleansed of all impediments, all fears, and all the evil paths!
Turn us away [from evils] O one who enjoys a purified life!
O one who empowers us with [the power of] the original covenant! O jewel, jewel, the great jewel! O Suchness which is reality-limit and absolute purity!
O one who is pure in his evolved enlightenment!
Be victorious, be victorious, be ever victorious, be ever victorious!
Bear in mind, bear in mind!
O one who is pure being empowered by all Buddhas!
O Vajragarbha who holds the Vajra! Let my body be like Vajra! Let those of all beings too be like Vajra!
O one who is in possession of an absolutely pure body! O one who is absolutely pure from all the paths of existence! And let me be consoled by all the Tathagatas!
O one who is empowered with the consoling power of all the Tathagatas!
Be enlightened, be enlightened, be ever enlightened, be ever enlightened!
Have them enlightened, have them enlightened, have them ever enlightened, have them ever enlightened!
O one who is most pure in a most thoroughgoing way!
O one who holds a great seal empowered with the spiritual power which emanates from the heart of every Tathagata!
Hail!
